Hello, this is a November 7 update of the Carolina Rare Bird alert featuring birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird Club. Highlights on this report include: WHITE PELICANS EURASIAN WIGEON REDDISH EGRET WHITE PELICANS have been reported from both Carolinas in the last week. In South Carolina 3 birds were at Lake Murray on 11-4. In North Carolina, also on 11-4, 12 pelicans were at Pea Island NWR (South Pond). On 11-6, two pelicans were at Wrightsville Beach on the flats north of the Shell Island Resort public parking area. An immature REDDISH EGRET, especially unusual this late in the year, is being seen at the Fort Fisher spit south of Kure Beach, NC. A four-wheel drive vehicle is needed to reach this bird at the Bald Head Island signs a few miles out onto the spit. A drake EURASIAN WIGEON is being seen with American wigeons at North Pond at Pea Island NWR in NC. This is a reliable location for this species each year in the fall. Thanks this week to Jeff Lewis, Bruce Smithson, David Groh, and Chuck Saleeby for their calls and reports. |
