Description: The Hospital Fields area consists of county-owned old fields between Transylvania Community Hospital and Pisgah Forest Elementary School. The core of this site is a series of weedy fields threaded with ditches and wet hedgerows. The area has several intersecting paths of varying length which provides easy walking and is wheelchair accessible.
Directions: This site lies in the community of Pisgah Forest about 20 miles southwest of Asheville and about 16 miles west of Hendersonville. From the intersection of NC 280 and US 64 continue west on US 64 toward Brevard. Turn left at the first light onto Ecusta Road. After passing the Ecusta industrial complex follow the signs to the Recreation Department parking lot behind Pisgah Forest Elementary School. Begin on the paved trail.
Birding Highlights: Sparrows and finches abound year-round, and in breeding season many colorful species such as Yellow-breasted Chat, Common Yellowthroat, and Indigo Bunting can be found. In early May, Willow Flycatcher can be singing from several spots along the ditches. A narrow belt of woods separates the fields from the hospital, and attracts tanagers, orioles, woodpeckers, and thrushes in season. Hawks of many kinds, and also Peregrine Falcons, may frequently be seen overhead. During migration period look for Lincoln's Sparrow. Migration has also produced a number of local rarities including Sora, Black-billed Cuckoo, Marsh Wren, and Chuck-will's-widow.
General Information: There are many restaurants, motel accommodations and service stations in Brevard and at the intersection of US 280 and US 64.
