Banding Day in the Queen City
...Susan had carefully placed the Black-chinned Hummingbird in Audrey's hand for release. Just a moment later, the bird was gone! But its effect on bander and host would surely last for a while.
The Mellichamp's little visitor elected to leave the next day, and was not seen in their yard again.
But the story is not yet over.
Five days later, Susan received a call from other hummingbird enthusiasts in Charlotte. A hummingbird had appeared in another yard in the Queen City. Quick investigation by local birders revealed the "new" hummingbird was adorned with a bright green "cap".
Unbelievably, following some instincts that are beyond our comprehension, the Mellichamp's Black-chinned Hummingbird had moved five miles across Charlotte in as many days!
Is that the end of the story? We'll just have to wait and see. (Next)
